In Trickster's Choice, Aly, the daughter of the Lioness and of Tortalls official spymaster, is made a slave and given to the Balitang family. But, her time in the Balitangs home in Rajmuat is short lived when the family is thrown into exile by their king. While in exile, Aly discovers that she was given to the Balitangs by the will of the god Kyprioth, the trickster god. She makes a deal with him: if she keeps the two oldest Balitang children, Sarai and Dove, alive until the Autumn equinox, the god will return her to her family in Tortall. Soon she becomes attatched to the family and invested in keeping them alive. When the book ends, Aly and the Balitang family are on their way back to Rajmuat.

Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Adventure: Adventure is the main theme, as the book is all about Aly's adventures in the copper Isles as she tries to keep the Balitang family safe.
  • Survival: Survival goes pretty much hand-in-hand with adventure - in this case, the characters mostly need to survive human problems rather than monsters, despite their existence in the story. Aly needs to keep the fmaily safe from humans who may wish to harm them, and try to keep them safe while the family is exiled by the Isle's king, who is mentally unstable.
  • Coming of Age: There are also elements of a coming of age story in the book - at the start, Aly has an idea of what she wants to do with her life, but she isn't allowed to, so instead she acts as the family 'do-nothing', staying at home and having fun instead of being serious. But when she's given the responsibility of the Balitang's safety, she grows up and matures a lot, and by the end of the book, she realizes she's starting to find her place in the world.
  • Romance: The romance theme in the book is the romance that slowly develops between Aly and Nawat, the crow-turned human. It's a really funny part a lot of the time, and Nawat doesn't really understand human mating rituals. It is very cute, though, and you can see as Aly starts to develop feelings for him as well. There's also a more complicated romance, as a friend of the Balitang Parents, Prince Bronau (Brother to the king's son in law) attempts to court Sarai.
