  • Ben Wilson: Ben lives in the 1970s and becomes deaf in the beginning. He travels to New York City to find his father. Complex with his love for collections and museum curation. He feels a strong tie to the wolves of Gunflint Lake, MN where he lives with his Aunt and Uncle after his mother's death. Finds his way to New York Where his story rapidly unfolds.
  • Rose Kincaid: Rose Kincaid is a young girl from 1927. She keeps a scrapbook with pictures of a famous, mysterious actress. She is completely deaf. She also finds herself in New York as her story unfolds parallel to Ben's but 50 years earlier. Their paths cross in an unexpected twist.
  • Walter Kincaid: Rose's older brother. He can hear and works at the American Museum of Natural History as a young man. He later opens a book store called Kincaid's.
  • Elaine Wilson: Ben's mother who works as a librarian. She dies in a car wreck before the novel starts.
  • Jamie: The boy in the museum who becomes a good friend of Ben's and helps him find a secret place to stay and hide in the museum.
  • Robby: Ben's cousin with whom he shares a room with.
  • Daniel: A former employee of the museum.
  • Aunt Jenny: Ben's aunt, who he lives with in Minnesota. She is Ben's mother's sister.
  • Uncle Steve: Ben's uncle.
  • Janet: Ben's cousin.
  • Lillian Mayhew: Rose's mother and silent screen actress.
