• Dr. Kay Scarpetta: Dr Scarpetta is the Quincy of ME books. She has extraordinary insight when seeking the solution to a crime. She's always outside the box.
• Pete Marino: Marino is a cop. In another life, he'd be the donut-eating epitome of a beat cop. He is Scarpetta's foil and bitterly jealous of her choice of husbands over him.
• Benton Wesley: Benton is an FBI profiler who, after a number of books, finally wears Dr. Kay down and they're a married couple. He provides expertise needed, on occasion, to move the story forward and, as always, the emotional platform for her to fall back upon during the denouement.
• Lucy Farinelli: Lucy is Kay's niece. She's an IT savant, independently wealthy as a result of several IT projects.
• Dr. Colin Dengate: An ME for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, Friends with Kay
• Sammy Chang: Investigator at the Georgia Bureau of Investigations
