“House --- The sheltered world where Clive and Elsa keep Dren locked in which they purport will keep her safe, but their dysfunctional attitudes and repressive behavior as bad parents corrupt her more to the darker sides of the human condition.”
“MORAL PREMISE --- Tampering with Nature leads to Suffering and Death, but Respecting Nature leads to Vitality.”
“Dren --- In Alchemy In alchemy, she symbolizes the incessant need of Man's obsession with using supernatural knowledge to bring about change for personal gain. Her constant awareness, limited by dysfunctional parents (Shadow Mentors), cripples her complete development and splices her life between finding her destiny or living out her parent's dreams. On the rooftop when she realizes she has wings, she has this chance to fly out and begin her destiny, but the infectious and false love (Dren, I love you) by Clive brings her back and once she gives in, she has chosen to remain in the "shadow" of her spiritual destiny as a higher life form than human beings.”
Dren: Dren is a symbol of completeness that echoes the ancient ideas of the angels being both sexes.
Dren as Female: As a female, she grows with an innocence toward humanity and in that innocence, she attempts to capture what's best and most profound about being human.
Dren as Savior: Dren's symbolism as savior has far-reaching angles because most saviors are always portrayed as men. Using this "splice" technique, the filmmakers show the development of a savior for humanity being corrupted by her parents (Shadow Mentors).
Violence - The Original Specimens: The original specimens battle when one of them changes sex, thus usurping the balance of Utopian romanticism between man and woman.
Dren's Violence: Dren's violence starts immediately from inception because when Elsa puts her hand in the chamber, Dren immediately attacks her symbolizing that her birth is a mistake and deadly to humanity.
Nature: As Nature, Dren's development is caused by splicing DNA, which has not been tested for compatibility or positive synthesis. From such chaotic origins, Dren's life is sure to be torn with so many lineages and ultimately, this splicing alienates her from choosing a dominant species.
