This is the story of a young girl who has just moved to a new town in Florida. Her name is India Opal Buloni. Her father is a preacher. They live in a mobile home park. Opal is lonely waiting for school to begin, until she meets a stray dog that wandered into the local Winn-Dixie grocery store. She names the dog Winn-Dixie. She begs her father to let her keep the dog. Finally he decides that she can keep Winn-Dixie. Winne-Dixie starts a chain of events that leads to Opal making a group of friends that particular summer. By the end of the summer Opal has be- friended Miss Fannie Block, a librarian who tells stories, Otis at the pet shop, Gloria Dump, an elderly lady who lives alone, Amanda Wilkinson, who is really not stuck up at all, a little girl named, Sweetiepie and the Dewberry brothers Stevie and Dunlap. The brothers thinks Gloria dump is a witch. Opal gets a kick out of calling the brothers bald-headed babies. Winn-Dixie is afraid of thunder. It starts to rain and thunder one day at a party. They thought that Winn-Dixie had run away, but he was under the bed all along. In this story Opal comes to turn with her mother abandoning her and her father when she was a baby. she wants the preacher to tell her ten things about her mom.

This is one of my favorite books. I made many connections. Even though my mom didn't abandon me, she died when I was only ten years old. Like Opal I wanted to know many things about my mom. I can remember being called names at school by peers. On our way home one day my brother and I came across a stray dog and he followed us home. We named him Blackie. In the country where I lived we walked everywhere and Blackie followed us everywhere we went.

I use this book as a read aloud and have students respond in their response journals by making connections, summarizing, make visualizations, inferring, and questioning.

This is a great book to read! Our Book Club called the "Next Chapter Book Club" read this as its first book to read as a club. We all agreed that the book was much better than the movie. We LOVED it. It is a great story about Friiendship and making Friends.
