Because of Winn Dixie tells the story of ten-year old Opal. She has just moved to Naomi, Florida with her preacher father. On an errand to the grocery store Opal finds a large, ugly, homeless dog. Opal is immediately attached to the dog whom she names Winn Dixie after the grocery store where she finds him. Together they make friends with Otis, an ex-convict who runs the local pet store; Miss Fanny, the librarian who has a desk full of "Litmus Lozenges" a type of candy which her great grandfather invented; and Gloria Dump, the lady the local children think of as a witch because of her jungle-like yard. This book will make you laugh as Opal and Winn Dixie make friends with these very likable characters in this small southern town.
very cute coming of age book about a girl and her dog. actually all of kate dicamillo books are good ( faves- edward tulane and great joy). also love the movie ( but also because dave matthews is in it!!!)
A great vehicle for introducing children to Southern fiction, this book is filled with rich characters, genuine emotion, and fun.
Great book for children. I read this one to my third grade class over the course of a couple of weeks. They love it! It's also a great book to teach parts of a story with including comparing and contrasting characters. I am adding this one to my literature circles.
laura, hannah and leah, i think this is one of those books, that is certainly great for YA, but not a bad read for grownups, and as far as loving dogs, you might say if you love dogs and kids, especially lonely little orphans! hannah, the scary is pretty mild by todays standards, it turned out beautifully!
onee of my favoritez!!!!!!! its just a touching story and the dogs makes it even better... GO WINNIE DIXIE YAHH!!!!.. LOL
It's a good book, but depressing at times. The movie is actually pretty much the book, unlike other movies based on books...
So if you get the chance you should really read this book, or even watch the movie, they're both great.
IT is a great book that is funny and sad. I think veryone that loves dogs should read this wonderful book.
i would add that anybody who loved dogs, children, humans and most of all a ggod read, will enjoy this book!
This was one of the first books I've ever read, it is a sad story but it is a good book to read.
this book is so awsome because it has charater, like some funny and stupid moments when it dont even make sensei ntil the end of the movie like in the beginning of the movie the dog just shows up in the store when she is getting her stuff for her dad. but if you take the time to read this book you will read it over and over again like i did about 10 times!!!
It was an alright book. But for people who love dogs as much as i do, it can get sort of sad. I don't know.....
Taylor C you are wrong! I read the book and fell in love with it at once!
It was one of the best books I've read!
My mum gave it to me when I was like seven and two years later I still read it now!
Everyone one of who has read the book must agree that it was one of Kate's BEST BOOKS SHE EVER WROTE!
georgie, i certainly agree that this is a wonderfl book, and every parent ought to read it and then either read it to their child, or encourage their child to read it on their own, but i am pretty sure we hav eto leave room for others who are not as enthralled with it. their lack of excitement should not take away from our enjoyment of the book. i have found truly smart wonderful caring people can have a very different take on many books that i like or dislike. be happy to claim this as one of your favorites. i hope you have a lifetime of reading and find many more favorites over the years!
Winn Dixie made me laugh and cry--a sign of a very good book. I am a librarian, and I just had to share it with everyone I know. I even read passages of it outloud to my husband as I was reading it. It is a book which should never sit on the shelf.
This is probably my number 1 recommended book to YA, and i also suggest it to adults, too. really a good piece of literature!
I read this book so many times its not funny! But i just LOVE it!
Defintely one of my favorite books that aren't vampire-related!
I read this book in one day and i couldn't put it down! This book makes me cry on how much India loves Winn Dixie. This book was funny, sad ,and all other sorts of feelings!Kate truly made this the best book ever!!

This is the story of a young girl who has just moved to a new town in Florida. Her name is India Opal Buloni. Her father is a preacher. They live in a mobile home park. Opal is lonely waiting for school to begin, until she meets a stray dog that wandered into the local Winn-Dixie grocery store. She names the dog Winn-Dixie. She begs her father to let her keep the dog. Finally he decides that she can keep Winn-Dixie. Winne-Dixie starts a chain of events that leads to Opal making a group of friends that particular summer. By the end of the summer Opal has be- friended Miss Fannie Block, a librarian who tells stories, Otis at the pet shop, Gloria Dump, an elderly lady who lives alone, Amanda Wilkinson, who is really not stuck up at all, a little girl named, Sweetiepie and the Dewberry brothers Stevie and Dunlap. The brothers thinks Gloria dump is a witch. Opal gets a kick out of calling the brothers bald-headed babies. Winn-Dixie is afraid of thunder. It starts to rain and thunder one day at a party. They thought that Winn-Dixie had run away, but he was under the bed all along. In this story Opal comes to turn with her mother abandoning her and her father when she was a baby. she wants the preacher to tell her ten things about her mom.
This is one of my favorite books. I made many connections. Even though my mom didn't abandon me, she died when I was only ten years old. Like Opal I wanted to know many things about my mom. I can remember being called names at school by peers. On our way home one day my brother and I came across a stray dog and he followed us home. We named him Blackie. In the country where I lived we walked everywhere and Blackie followed us everywhere we went.
I use this book as a read aloud and have students respond in their response journals by making connections, summarizing, make visualizations, inferring, and questioning.
I liked this book because it has a cute plot and its a fun story. My favorite part of the book was when she found the dog in the store. I would recommend this to my peers because its a good story and you'd enjoy it. I would give this book 5 stars.
This book was a very cute book! I read the book and then saw the movie. My favorite part was when she found win-dixie in the store, it was so funny! I would reccommend this to all of my friends, probably not guys though. Its a wonderful story! FIVE STARS(:
um I know several fourth grade guys who really enjoyed this book. I also thought the part about Winn Dixie chasing the mouse (was it?) through the church was really funny. I had to lol !
I have read this book over 10 times and I stll love it!!! :) this is a good story about love and friendship. I saw the movie but i didnt really get that into it. I honestly like the book the more.
Good call. I almost always like the book better because I can turn my imagination loose.
The book was really good. That dog is the best friend ever! Wouldn't it be cool if all dogs could smile?
Haha I like your picture, but it's a little ironic, don't you think?
i loved reading this book!!! it was a very easy and quick read(: i would recomend this to anybody who wants a good heart warming book.
me too. what character did you like best that winn-dixie introduced her to?
i liked all the amagination. it was about this girl and her dog and i love dogs so i started reading it and i dont really know you have to have a open mind.
I'm so glad Winn-Dixie doesn't die or get lost. A lot of books with dogs have sad endings. Not that they aren't great, just sad. But this book is great and happy.
Opal's mom left the family when Opal was young. She left because she was an alcoholic and she was constantly arguing with the preacher. Do you think Opal's mother had a good reason for leaving her family?
I don't think there's ever a good reason for someone to leaver their family.
I Lori Berning's student read this book and i think that it is a very good book. I like the part when Opal throws a party at Gloria Dumps house and it started raining so they all had to go inside. Because of the storm Winn-Dixie got scared and ran off and Opal went out to look for him. She looked every where and then she rode her bike to her place to see if he maybe went home. When she got home she opened the door and the Preacher was sitting in the living room when he was supposed to be at the party. Opal was really disapointed that he wasnt even on his way and she ran out the door. he sopped her and told her to get in the car. She really didn't want to but she did and they went out and look for Winn-Dixie togetherand while they where looking for him Opal asked her dad if her mom was ever going to come back. Her dad said that he does think about it and that he doesnt think that she will be comeing back.
