  • Jacob Lau: A fifteen-year-old boy who grew up in Hawaii is forced to live with family he never knew he had in Paris, Illinois, after his mother disappears in an accident that leaves him with strange nightmares. He suffers from the bigotry from his classmates because he is part Asian/part Caucasian. He begins to realize that something about him is different when he meets Dr. Silva.
  • Dr. Abigail Silva: A brilliant, seemingly young and beautiful woman with a doctorate in a specialized branch of botany, Jacob's neighbor
  • Malini Gupta: An Indian girl in Jacob's school, quiet, smart and like Jacob, ostracized for being 'different'
  • Dane Michaels: The school big shot, a bully whose family had lived in Paris for many generations. Dane torments Jacob as soon as he starts school.
