Travis, an 8th grader, has started a new school. He likes to keep a low profile because he doesn't want anyone to know he can't read. He is also dealing with the loss of his parents, his dog, and his alcoholic grandfather. But things begin to change when he meets Velveeta, a fellow student who is dealing with some harsh realities of her own, and Mr. McQueen, his reading teacher who sees through Travis' stall tactics and works to gain his trust. This is a really good, heartwarming story of friendship, life struggles, and forgiveness.
