I always liked the Jesse Stone series better than Parker's Spenser novels. After his death, the series has apparently been taken over by Michael Brandman, and it's been a disappointment. He's tried to capture the staccato cadence of Parker's books and succeeded to some extent, but Stone...

Good, but not the best of the series, sadly though the last.

I would have liked this better if it was written by someone that had knowledge of the Jesse Stone books... not the movies (which stray further and further from the books except for the main character and setting). They wrote Sunny out, which stinks because I'd like to find out what happened to her and I thought they were perfect for each other. There are also inconsistensies, like when he says that Jesse hadn't talked to his old boss since he fired him, but in one of the last Sunny Randall books, Jesse goes to L.A., speaks to, and even sees his old boss. The three stars are as a book alone, because it did have good writing and a great plot... I was just hoping it would wrap up the story Robert B. Parker was trying to tell... not start their own version.

A Jesse StoneNovel written not by Robert Parker. Reads a little like a screen play. Having seen several of the movie adaptations, I could picture the actor's who play the various characters in town. Easy light read.

Have liked some of these Jessie Stone books ever since I saw Tom Selleck play him in the movies. This one is satisfying.

Brandman also incorporates a lot more of the elements in the films into his novels. This one had several different cases in it, lots of action, unexpected elements and wonderfully witty and sarcastic dialogue. It took edge of your seat to a new level.

This really wasn't Jesse Stone. Jesse Stone, Spenser, are alpha tough guys and this character comes across more like an Archy McNally. This Jesse Stone is more like a bullied, dweeb social worker acting like a tough guy. Lot of glaring going on. At one point Jesse feels "vulnerable". In my youth I was in bad situations, you don't feel vulnerable, you don't feel invulnerable, you just feel competent and I ain't no Jesse Stone. No dog, Parker's characters all have a dog and this Jesse Stone ends up with a bed hogging cat that Jesse tries to sleep around. Really? I loved my cat and I used to shove him off my bed. He'd just climb back up and fit himself to me. I never thought about it, but, I really can't imagine an alpha tough guy like Stone or Spenser letting a cat or a dog push him around. Still, the author is okay, the story didn't totally suck and I enjoyed the read. I am going to miss Robert Parker,

I always liked the Jesse Stone series better than Parker's Spenser novels. After his death, the series has apparently been taken over by Michael Brandman, and it's been a disappointment. He's tried to capture the staccato cadence of Parker's books and succeeded to some extent, but Stone has lost all subtlety and he's not as interesting a character. Meld that with several irrelevant side-plots that muddy things (cat, bullying, personal vendetta, another real estate agent squeeze, etc.) and one wonders where things are going. Brandman is just trying to hard to add the pop-psychology crap that irritated me in the Spenser novels, and we are expected to believe that Jesse Stone lecturing a group of girls on their bad behavior will immediately reform them. Then he lectures the principal of the school in a silly diatribe. Molly and Suit disappear into the muck whereas in the real Stone books they were developing into interesting characters.
Oh well. Robert Parker should be left to rest in peace. The idea that anyone could simply pick up and continue a series demeans the author's craft.

I read this on the plane ride home from Boulder, Co. It is an easy read. It was the first Jesse Stone I have read not written by Robert B. Parker. I don't like that Jesse curses now. I liked him better when he used a dry wit instead.

Very Light and predictable. OK for a quick read.
