I read an article in the NYT about Namu. This book increased her celebrity ten fold & she has capitalized on it-- she made a splash by proposing to Sarkozy-- sadly, this book has resulted in sex tourism and other exploitative practices which are destroying Moso society.

An interesting memoir about the Moso culture, a minority culture from the mountains of western China. Yang does get a bit nostalgic and this sometimes makes the Moso a bit utopian but this is a wonderful memoir of a matrilineal culture with 'walking marriages' (women take lovers and raise the children in their mother's house) and the universal struggle between mothers and daughters.
