A simplistic description of the plot: the story of Henry Scrimshander from South Dakota and his rise to potential major league star, as well as the story of those around him. The book is actually about life, the balls it throws, and how people chose to "field" them. ** The characters are memorable, the plot kept me going, and the theme was handled really well. It didn't get five stars because i felt there were some holes in the story telling -- things or people that were introduced and dropped. It's true that this happens in life, but it was a little disconcerting and not really clear in terms of the story telling. Well worth the time to read (or listen as I did) and very discussable. It would make a fine choice for a book group willing to read a longer book.
