Hope Preston is an operator for an answering service in Boston who befriends many clients, treating them with the same kindness she would a family member. The lady she works for is always trying to match up Hope with some male, wanting her to "get a life". However, Hope is trying to eke out a living from her meager salary, taking college courses with the intent of someday getting a well-paying job so she can finally search for the two sisters and foster brother who were separated from her eight years before. At that time, there was also a terrible family mystery surrounding the death of her parents.
When one of her clients, a rich businessman named Zachariah (Zack) Givens, calls the service, Hope mistakenly assumes it's his butler, Griswald. Zack lets her continue to think that but doesn't realize that it won't be long before her sexy voice has him wanting to talk to her more and more. He waits too long to tell her of the game he's been playing.
When Hope finally finds out, it's in the middle of an awful event, but no matter how much she cares for him, no matter how much he can help her (and wants to), her independence won't allow it. She feels she can go it alone.
The solution to the "awful event" was a bit silly, although the author made it plausible. But because I enjoyed the rest of this book so much, I'll not complain.
