“This should be right in my wheelhouse: written by my favourite musician, set in my home forests, a cross between Labyrinth and The Chronicles of Narnia starring a spunky bookish girl who idolises Nancy Drew, filled with intriguing 10 dollar words I'd have looked up and cherished...I just couldn't get into it.
It's got a condescending "kiddies' storytelling" tone that I hated in my youth and find frustrating now and had a really distracting problem with word repetition. A heavy-handed editor would have done this book a lot of favours.
"...The birds disappeared around--"
Curtis interrupted her. "Birds? What birds?"
"The birds that kidnapped my brother"...
Curtis' face had dropped. "What do you mean, birds kidnapped your brother?" he stammered. "Like, birds?"
I am hoping the next one is better because I really want to love this series! ”
