Shane Galanter and Lauren Anderson (Gibbs) are two high school students who fall in love in high school. Unfortunately, both of their parents do not 100% approve. They are allowed to see each other and date, but neither set of parents think the feelings will last. When Lauren becomes pregnant, Shane wants to marry her. In order to prevent the two 17 year olds from getting married, the parents decide to both move. Shane moves to California, while Lauren moves to Illinois.

Lauren ends up having a baby girl, whom she names Emily. With both of their parents blocking any possible communication between them, Lauren decides to drive to drive to California to find Shane and tell him/show him their beautiful baby. After Lauren leaves for California, Emily becomes sick while traveling, causing Lauren to return to Illinois. She is forced to bring her to a hospital. A nurse at the hospital calls Lauren and misinforms her that her baby is gone. Since she has no reason to stay in Illinois, she moves to California in hopes of finding Shane some day. In order to prevent being found by her parents, Lauren assumes a different last name, hoping that it will not prevent Shane from finding her.

Shane becomes flight instructor for the NAVY, and Lauren gets a job as a war correspondent for Time magazine. Unfortunately, they fail to meet. Lauren stops thinking about getting married, and Shane sometimes thinks about finding someone else and possibly starting a family, but cannot let go of the memories of Lauren.

Emily, Lauren’s “thought to be dead” daughter, is grown up and is now a college student. With no parents to raise her, Emily is raised by her grandparents (Lauren’s mother and father). She finds a box that contains letters and other writings that tell the love story between her mother and father, Lauren and Shane, she is determined to find them.
