A government housing inspector suffers a suspicious fall. Brunetti must discover what the accident has to do with a student's drug overdose and Venice's loan-sharks.

This is the first Guido Brunnetti series book I've read. I enjoyed it a great deal. Leon writes a good detective story, with characters that are well developed. THe setting makes a great nbackdrop for a good story. Must add this seriesd to my "to be read" list.

Commissario Brunetti investigates corruption, loan sharks, drug addicts, and - of course - murder in Venice. Interesting facts about Venice history are embedded in the story. I thought the solution to the case was a bit of a letdown though. So I’d say, not her best.

This is one of my favorite Donna Leon Commissario Brunetti mysteries. Ellen bought this after reading the Donna Leon I picked up in Palm Springs. This one involves corruption in the Ufficio Catasto and the idiosyncratic building codes of Venice.
