Among the top three books I've ever read. The three major reasons I enjoyed it so much were: (1) I was taken along on a trip to the interior of Brazil, while it was still very much a frontier, in what was likely one of the last first encounters between the Old World and the New, while the luminous quality of Levi-Strauss's writing conveyed the picture better than any photographs I've seen; (2) je ne sais squat from anthropology and I experienced it as "legal voyeurism" and (3) Levi-Strauss's reflections on society, language, history and culture, all of which are remarkably condensed into the last chapter of the work, are applicable to five of the six stories on the cover of today's New York Times. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
