The novel explores the character and leadership of Abraham Lincoln by examining his decision making and his relationships among members of his cabinet. Either the book is extremely sympathetic to Lincoln, or he was truly both a great and good man....” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I will read this book some day. Lincoln fascinates me. I want to understand where that moral courage came from. This book will help reveal the man behind the icon.”

Focuses on his pure political genius, and raises politics to the highest art, which is all that stands between peace and destruction for mankind. The ending is like a death in itself, leaving you breathless at the wanton finality of it. Is this the greatest book on the art of politics ever written? Its the best one I have ever read.”

trying times.”
“This was my first Lincoln biography and has whetted my appetite for more about a fascinating man. I "read' the audiobook version, which was abridged, and I'd have to estimate that, based on the length of the audio files vs. the length of the book, they must have trimmed at least half of the material. I always hate reading abridged versions and avoid it like the plague, but this is what my library had available.

“Story of how Lincoln became president & managed his presidency through extraordinary diplomacy, patience, perserverance, and an astute view of human nature. This book focuses primarily on his cabinet: Salmon P Chase - Treasury Secretary; William Seward - Secretary of State; Edwin Stanton - War Secretary and how they initially were skeptical of Lincoln's ability to lead. However they became impressed with ability to understand all sides of an issue and make judgements for the greater good. Much of the book explores the personal lives of all these men. It also demonstrates Lincoln's tremendous humility and humanity.”

It's a little bit of a slow start because the author talks about the rivals first, which is necessary. I had to keep notes at the beginning in order to keep the rivals straight in my mind. It's truly a fabulous read and I came to understand more fully the impact Lincoln personally had on the outcome of the war and the slavery issue. Be sure to read the entire book, don't stop after Lincoln dies.”
