Excellent book! The writer really draws you into the lives back in that time. You get a real sympathy for the main character as to the way she was treated. I couldn't imagine living back then and being treated as nothing but an object that has no mind of her own.

Interesting enough to keep me reading but about half way through I flipped through to the end because I just didn't care anymore.

A good historical fiction read about a high-society young woman in NYC in 1885 who is unhappy and controlled by the men in her life.

"Old Style writing" but good...the way folks lived back then was pretty strange, but whose to say we don't live oddly today. :)

It was about a woman whose husband thought she was bored but then put her in a mental institution...she fell in love with her psychiatrist before that.

Shows the oppression of women back then in English Society.

It was slow at first, but keep going. :)

Fast-moving with a big twist in the middle that takes the book in another direction.

A book of a woman stuck in a life and time that would not allow her to follow her passions-or have a passion for that matter. The requirements of a woman in high society was not what she wanted and being stripped of things she loved like painting and serving a man that was using her for her class standing caused what we would see as anxiety attacks or hysteria. In that day in age, though, when the male doctors didn't understand women or women's health, it was deemed a problem with her ovaries or other female parts. She moved from one man who controlled her life to a man that may have been trying to help her, but chose to do some things that controlled her and would help him with his future and standings. It was a quick read. A little smutty a times as it contained more sex than I had initially thought it would. I loved the last 50 or so pages! The ending was great!!! Our book club really enjoyed discussing it and everyone enjoyed reading it.

This book needs to read carefully and thoughtfully, I found it tiresome in spots and really would think twice before I recommended it to someone I didn't know.
If you are like me (willing to try anything once) go for it.

There were a lot of incongruities at the beginning of this story which I found pretty annoying. Even so it was nearly impossible to stop turning the pages to see just what was going to happen next. Fortunately the plot and characters began to gel nicely as the story progressed.

An interesting portrait of a "privileged" woman at the turn of the century. DO NOT read he ending first, as I often do, though luckily, did not. :)
