A lucid explanation of childbirth and the Bradley Method, an approach to childbirth whose primary tenet is that a normal birth is an unmedicated one with minimal interference. Like many Bradley texts, its photographs and an underlying suspicion of contemporary obstetrical practice show it to be slightly dated and biased, but the text could not have been more gratifyingly clear. I highly recommend it to anyone considering natural childbirth. Once we have the baby, I'll write an updated opinion. ;) UPDATE (1/19/08): Everything we gained from having read this book served as well in childbirth. I recommend the book even more highly now that we've had the baby.

I highly recommend this book to any woman considering "natural" childbirth or, more specifically, childbirth without the use of pain medication and with as little medical intervention as possible. I read this book before the birth of my son and found it even more helpful than the Bradley classes my husband and I participated in. It is comprehensive, thorough, inspiring, well-illustrated, and full of good advice for the mother as well as the "coach" (in my case, my husband). One word of advice: start reading early in your pregnancy (as soon as you are pregnant, if possible, but hopefully no later than a few months before your due date). You will need time to prepare yourself both mentally and physically for this most rewarding challenge.

Probably the best natural childbirth book I read. Easy, insightful, generous; with it's help I had a calm 7 hour labor and 45 minute delivery of my son, at the age of 35. An excellent book for the birthing partner, too. My husband was as calm as The Buddha because he felt so prepared.

This a great book. I read it before my 2nd was born while I was taking Bradley classes and I have refered back to it over and over again since then.

I can't say enough about the Bradley class my husband and I took when I was pregnant. Even if you do not plan to have a natural birth, this class taught us so much about the process of pregnancy and childbirth. It really helped us to feel more educated and prepared. The suggestions for exercises, relaxation techniques, and nutrition were all invaluable.

Great book on natural childbirth, but I rate Ina May's as more useful. I tried some of the techniques in here but they are not for everyone...for instance the huge emphasis on the husband as coach. Yes, my husband was a wonderful help and the only "duola" I had, but I would not have liked him coaching my every contraction, for the simple reason that he couldn't feel it! It worked better for me to communicate what I needed and when I needed to be left alone. Great information in here, though, and gives you many options to try during labor.

This is a really good book to help you have natural childbirth. There were a few things she wrote that I ignored, but most of it was very helpful. You also just have to ignore the pictures--my husband and I would just joke about them. Come on, do you really have to do all of the excercises naked? I discovered I could do them with my clothes on and my husband didn't just wear shorts with not shirt. But the information in the book is definitely worth it.
