• Lena Duchannes: A caster girl with powers as a Natural. She chose what she wanted to be when she was claimed: a Dark and Light Caster. Girlfriend to Ethan and currently suffering the consequences of her choice. Doesn't like the fact that she had to have the choice in the first place.
• Ethan Lawson Wate: A normal southern teenager. Well, not so normal, his girlfriend is a Caster and he just learned that he is a Wayward. The protagonist of the novels, he provides an almost normal perspective to the weird world hidden in the Gatlin community.
• Wesley Jefferson “Link” Lincoln: Was a normal teenager until he was turned into an quarter-Incubus by John Breed. Wild, jokester personality. In love with Ridley.
• Amarie "Amma" Treadeau: A seer and the housekeeper for Ethan and his dad. He is the closest thing to a mother that Ethan has since his own mother died. Possesses powers of her own.
• Macon Melchizedek Ravenwood: Lena's Uncle, an Incubus that had died and had come back as a Light Caster with unknown, extraordinary powers.
• Ridley "Rid" Duchannes: A Siren Caster whose powers were taken away by Lena's Mother, Sarafine. Also Lena's cousin. She is tough, sexy, and determined to have her way. She becomes jealous when Savannah tries to be Link's girlfriend.
• Aunt Prudence "Prue" Statham: One of the Sisters and Ethan's aunts. She has charted unknown Caster Tunnels and is the only one of the Sisters who knows about them.
• Savannah Snow: Popular girl at school who previously wouldn't have anything to do with Link, but now wants him after he becomes an Incubus. This infuriates Ridley.
• Olivia "Liv" Durand: The British girl who lost her chance to be Keeper in the last book - she is working with Macon in this book. Struggles with the consequence of taking a side. Continues to have a conflicted relationship with Ethan.
• John Breed: A half-Incubus/Hybrid. He made Ethan jealous by taking Lena into the Tunnels and then disappeared in the last book. He is also an important part to Abraham's plans. Very mysterious and keeps to himself.
• Lilian English: English teacher at Jackson High who has a glass eye.
• The Lilum: The Wheel of Fate, Queen of Demons.
• Grandfather Abraham: A Blood Incubus and Macon's great-great-great-grandfather. He is evil and wants to eliminate all Casters.
• Emily Asher: One of the girls at Jackson High who Ethan went on a date with once. She is the daughter of Mrs. Asher. She is best friends with Savannah Snow and they relentlessly mock Lena.
• Mitchell Wate: Ethan's father and widowed professor. Wants to write a book about the Civil War called the Eighteenth Moon.
• Marian Ashcroft: A librarian and Keeper. Close friend of the Wate family. Trains future keepers of the Lunae Libri.
• Sarafine: Lena's mother, a Dark Caster and a Cataclyst. Spent years struggling with the light and dark within her. Before she Turned her name was Izabel. Obsessed with fire because she is a catacylst
• John Eades: A Light Caster and Lena's father. He was an Evanescent which means he can make objects disappear and reappear in different places like a magician.
• Reece Duchannes: Lena's oldest cousin, Barclay and Delphine's first daughter and sister of Larkin, Ridley and Ryan. She's a Sybil, meaning she can read faces, see the truth hidden inside people. She is a Light Caster.
• Ryan Duchannes: Lena's youngest cousin and daughter of Delphine Duchannes and Barclay Kent. Ryan is discovered to be a Thaumaturge, considerably known as a healer or a performer of miracles.
• Delphine "Del" Duchannes: Sister of Sarafine; wife of Barclay Kent; mother of Larkin, Ridley, Reece, and Ryan. She can see the past, present, and future but has been having abnormal behavior since Lena broke the Order.
