Is God listening?
Why should God care about me?
Who do so many prayers go unanswered?
Why does God let the world go on as it does and not intervene?

This book brought to light for me, a lot of different ways to pray that are acceptable in God's eyes that I never realized were ok before. It really broadens the scope of how to pray as well.....definately worth taking the time to read.

    Yancey answers such questions as:
    Is God listening?
Why should God care about me?
Who do so many prayers go unanswered?
Why does God let the world go on as it does and not intervene?
Does prayer really help with physical healing?
Why does God seem sometimes close and sometimes far away?
Does prayer change God or change me?
How can I make prayer more satisfying?

My favorite quote: "Why pray? Evidently, God likes to be asked. God certainly does not need our wisdom or our knowledge, nor even the information contained in our prayers. But by inviting us into the partnership of creation, God also invites us into relationship. God is love, said the apostle John. God does not merely have love or feel love. God is love and cannot not love. As such, God yearns for relationship with the creatures made in His image."

Yancey poses all the questions and engages mind and spirit in pondering the answers to these questions.

A book that will be on my bedside for random conversation with my Maker.
This book brought me home again, such that randomness resulted to intamacy, such that my Maker is now my Father, my Lord, my confidant, my Savior, my Redeemer, my Hope, and my Strength.

I always find that good books on prayer make me want to pray more and this one did. It is a very honest look at prayer dealing especially with the disappointments of prayer. However, I did find that in one part of the book that Yancey was too skeptical with regard to prayer and left me thinking "maybe prayer doesn't make a difference."

In some ways this is Yancey's strength as a writer, he questions outloud what we all have thought at one time or another and doesn't give pat answers in hopes of soothing the reader.

Overall it was well worth the read and I would recommend it.

Philip Yancey is quickly becoming one of my favorite spiritual writers. He does not shy away from the tough questions and brings a plethora of research and perspectives to these questions. I will read this again.

Yancey has a way with words like he's just across the table and having a conversation with you. and not just any conversation but one of the important aspect of Christian life- prayer. I always go back to this book for comfort and to be reminded how much prayer can do for my life and yours.

this is the book that has changed my life the most in the past 5 years of reading. it is a discussion, handbook, collection of musings and gathering of general thoughts on the mystery of prayer. I rarely buy books but this one I bought before I was 1/4 of the way through my library copy.
