I truly enjoyd this novel set in England during WWII and then quickly evolving into a dark fantasy. There are a number of twisted fairy tales that are part of the adventure and others that are told while traveling the road to see the king - reminiscent to me of the Canterbury Tales. ...

A Fantastic book with a twist of the classic fairy tales. A boy loses all reality as he searches for true meaning after losing his mother to cancer.

Intriguing beginning, then it slows down a bit before picking up again. Overall, a good read.

Well crafted and outstandingly disturbing. Surely not a book for children per se, it is a book about childhood, about things lost and things gained, about innocence and adulthood, about finding the light in a world of darkness and never letting go, about the essence of evil and how to tame its seed. This book reminds you if you have forgotten, that the world is not to be seen in black and white, but in many shades of grey. It quenches the bittersweet thirst of fairytales you have blocked out and makes you dream again, no matter how old you've grown.

A wonderful dark, tale of a boy who wanders into a fairy tale world of his own, and others' making. I absolutely loved it. Not for kids though!

I think I would have liked this better when I was younger. It is a coming of age fairy tale.

Oh maannn. Seriously disturbing, yet beautiful book. A wrenching portrait of adolescent loss, as 12 year old David copes with his mother's death and his father's remarriage. Like the iconic fairy-tale heroines in a similar predicament, David finds himself wandering a hostile world, pursued by sentient wolves, bloodthirsty beasts and a terrifying creature called The Crooked Man, reminiscent of Rumplestiltskin, the Erl King, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Child Catcher.

For all the horror, this also has hilarious passages. Books talk to David, but the older, outdated ones merely snore; a band of 7 vertically challenged miners gripe bitterly about their oppressive mistress, an aging beauty who proved surprisingly resistant to poisoned apples.

I forget much of the story, but remember being drawn in and constantly 'wowed' by the authors imagination. Definitely a book I would reread in the future.
