The story revolves around Sadie and Leah Ebersol. The two young women are at the age where they can begin to court or in other words, begin dating. Sadie is older than Leah. She is at the age where she is allowed to experience the outside world before she makes her decision of becoming baptised and being completely obedient to the church. She is more rambunctious than Leah. Sadie is more content with the Amish way of life. She is excited to start courting and she has her eyes on someone that happens to be her cousin. Her father has other plans for her, however. He wants Leah to court with their neighbor's son. Leah does not have the same feelings for Smithy Gid, the neighbor's son, but she is caught between following her heart and making her father happy. Sadie, on the other hand, finds herself in a bigger predicament than Leah. Sadie makes one of the biggest mistakes she could ever make and finds herself keeping a secret from her whole family otherwise she will face being shunned by them. At the end of the book, Sadie finds herself in a situation where her secret can no longer be kept hidden.
