  • Lena Morgan Jones (aka Lena Haloway): The protagonist of the story. In the first novel, Lena escapes from Portland into the Wilds. Loves Alex, who she believes was killed during their botched escape. Formerly known as Lena Ella Haloway.
  • Alex. And Alex: A teenage boy from the Wilds otherwise known as an Invalid. In the first novel, Alex and Lena fall in love. He is presumed dead, as he was brutally injured after their attempt to flee to the Wilds together.
  • Raven: Homestead leader in the Wilds. She is 21 years old, and is named for her dark black hair. She does not like to talk about her life before she escaped to the Wilds. Raven likes for everything to be organized and in its place.
  • Julian Fineman: The charismatic son of Thomas Fineman. Has wavy blond hair and striking blue eyes. He is the leader of the youth division of Deliria-Free America. Julian speaks at DFA rallies, and supports the idea that all people should get the cure (regardless of age or medical conflict).
  • Thomas Fineman: The head of the DFA, and Julian's father.
  • Tack: One of the people at Raven's homestead. Is described as dark, withdrawn and moody. He is viewed as a leader.
  • Hana: In the first novel, Hana is featured as Lena's best friend. She is rebellious, athletic and beautiful. Hana is one of many people that Lena left behind in Portland. Hana was due to be cured in November.
  • Hunter: One of the people at Raven's homestead. Is open and friendly, and is an Unnatural. He is one of the few people who becomes close to Lena during her time in the Wilds.
  • Grace Tiddle: Lena's eight-year-old, seemingly mute cousin. Lena is the only person to have heard Grace speak. Lena feels responsible for and very close to her. Lena left her behind in Portland. Is a character in the first novel, and mentioned several times in this novel.
  • Carol Tiddle: Lena's cured aunt, and a character in the first novel. Carol allowed Lena to live with her after the death/imprisonment of Lena's mother. Is obsessed with making the right impression. Lena left Carol behind in Portland.
  • Blue: A young girl in the Wilds who lives at Raven's homestead. Her youth and shy demeanor remind Lena of Grace. Lena believes that she was named Blue because of her blue eyes.
  • Coin: A physically deformed woman who lives with a group of people underground. Her name originates from the fact that her face is physically deformed, causing one half of her face to look different from the other side.
  • Sarah Beth Miller: The ID Lena took from the DFA storeroom.
  • Dr. Hillebrand: Julian's doctor.
  • Annabel Giles Haloway: Lena's mother. Believed to have committed suicide when Lena was six years old. In the first novel Lena discovers that her mother was actually alive and being held captive in solitary confinement in Ward Six of the Crypts as a Level 8 Agitator until she escaped by tunnelling out.
  • Rat-man: An Invalid who lives underground with others, including Coin.
  • Albino: A Scavenger whom Lena nicknames "Albino" due to his physical appearance.

  • Deliria: The disease that is love.
  • Cureds: Those who have undergone the operation to get rid of deliria, or in the case that they've never had deliria, to become 'immune'
  • Invalids: Those have not been cured and have crossed the border into the Wilds. Or grown-up/born there.
  • Scavengers: A group of people who are against the DFA and the cure. They resort to violence and havoc to make their point.
  • Unnatural: Homosexuals or anyone who expresses more feeling (like loving instead of contentedness)
