  • Lena Morgan Jones: The protagonist of the story. She has escaped from Portland into the Wilds. Loves Alex, who she believes was killed during their botched escape. Formerly known as Lena Ella Haloway.
  • Alex Sheathes: A teenage boy from the Wilds otherwise known as an Invalid. The boy Lena fell in love with and showed her that love is not a disease. Presumed dead.
  • Raven: Homestead leader in the Wilds. 21 years old with black hair.
  • Julian Fineman: The charismatic son of Thomas Fineman. Has wavy blond hair and striking blue eyes. He is the leader of the youth division of Delirium-Free America.
  • Thomas Fineman: The head of the DFA. A very "respectable" man. Julian's father
  • Tack: One of the people at Raven's homestead. Is described as dark and withdrawn.
  • Hana: Lena's wealthy, stunningly gorgeous best friend, yet with a rebellious side to her. Believed to be cured in November.
  • Hunter: One of the people at Raven's homestead. Is open and friendly, and is an Unnatural.
  • Grace Tribble: Grace is Lena's eight-year-old, mute cousin. Lena feels responsible for and very close to her. Lena left her behind in Portland.
  • Carol Tribble: Carol is Lena's cured aunt, with whom she lived. Is obsessed with making the right impression. Lena left Carol behind in Portland.
  • Blue: One of the people at Raven's homestead. She is a little girl who reminds Lena of Gracie.
  • Coin: A physically deformed woman who lives with a group of people underground.
  • Sarah Beth Miller: The ID Lena took from the DFA storeroom which she uses to infiltrate the laboratory where they plan to execute Julian
  • Dr. Hillebrand: Julian's primary. The doctor who will execute Julian.
  • Annabel Giles Haloway: Lena's mother... believed to have committed suicide when Lena was six years old. Instead, she was being held captive in solitary confinement in Ward Six of the Crypts as a Level 8 Agitator until she escaped by tunnelling out. Lena learns that her prisoner intake number is 5996 and that this is the same person who rescued her from the Salvage.
  • Rat-man: one of the Invalids who stays underground... Rat-man is the one who leads Lena and Julian above ground
  • Albino: one of the Scavengers who's holding Lena and Julian

  • Deliria: The disease that is love.
  • Cureds: Those who have undergone the operation to get rid of deliria, or in the case that they've never had deliria, to become 'immune'
  • Invalids: Those have not been cured and have crossed the border into the Wilds. Or grown-up/born there.
  • Scavengers: A group of people who are against the DFA and the cure. They resort to violence and havoc to make their point.
  • Unnatural: Homosexuals or anyone who expresses more feeling (like loving instead of contentedness)
