A very complicated story about a relatively simple plot. My problem with the text was trying to decide what was really going on with the two step parents and Mrs Wix. They all seemed to be taking the affairs much too seriously - as if there was something else going on (especially since they kept talking about how Sir Claude was "afraid of himself" - not quite sure what he was afraid of...The story itself is quite good and you can really tell that Maisie grows up in this. She is definitely picking up the traits of her other parents and it's almost as if she "saves" herself at the end. Sir Claude certainly comes out as the most interesting character as he seems pretty much doomed from the beginning from anything that resembles responsibility. A short novel by James that might be appreciated more by those that have read his other works - definitely not to be missed, though.
