  • Clerval: Frankenstein's male traveling compainon. Is more upbeat and tourist-like than his friend.
  • Browning: Carnival owner.
  • Bradbury: Name of the Illustrated Man. <He has lots of tattooes>
  • Jane: A pretty girl who Billy falls in love with.
  • Gratz: An old man who Billy used to live and work for <thieving>
  • Ol' Twhaite: An old man who Billy and Creecher stay with when travelling North, in exchange for doing work around the barn. Is very accepting of both Billy and the large, shadowy man.
  • Fletcher: The leader of the thieves who is out to kill Billy.
  • Shelley: A kindly man who catches Billy stealing from him. Gives him some money and tells him to run along.
  • Mary: Kindly woman who is married to Shelley.
  • Mister Creecher: Creecher is a large, towering man who has the night on his trail. Despite his appearance, he is a vegetarian, an avid reader and all he searches fro is friendship and a mate.

  • Behing Human: Questions what it means to be a human. Creecher is so human in some respects, whereas many see him as a monster.
  • Friendship: Billy and Creecher make the most unlikely of friends, and their friendship is tested a lot throughout the novel
  • Love: Creecher searches for a mate to love.
  • Society's Views: To society, both Billy and Creecher are perceived as the filthiest of the low, and whilst one commands attention and fear, the other can slip around unnoticed.
