Jack Gantos is a boy in a town called Norvelt. Early in the summer, he accidentally shot off a rifle and cut down his mom's corn garden. Then his mom said he was grounded for summer. The only thing he could do was go to Miss Volker's house to write obituaries. At the end of the summer, a strange thing happened. All the old people started dying. People thought it was weird, so the people of Norvelt called the police.

The police were not suspicious at this time. They didn't know that Spizz had tied Miss Volker up in her basement. While he with her, he told her had murdered the people.

Once Spizz was six hours out of town, he called Jack and told him where to find Miss Volker once he had time to get away.
