Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Names and Naming: In the book, modern society came to a screeching halt and led humanity to the brink of extinction. Many objects, such as The Bell, are irreverently named to remind readers not to take our way of life for granted. There are also many reminders in the book that material objects that can seem important mean very little compared to the people around us.
  • Religion: While religion isn't discussed in the book, there are undertones of several religions and mythologies. For example, a woman with snakes for hair appears, and the main character assumes she must be Medusa from Greek mythology. Could the gods and mysterious creatures of Earth be alien visitors? The characters Adam and Eve in the series are also typical for the author. Man-made, they were intended to start a new era, but the attempt failed because of free will.
