Talk about a clash of cultures! A historical novel about sacrifice filled with doom. Asks one of those unanswerables: Why is God silent in the face of so much suffering?

It's amazing to see how a Japanese can write about persecuted Christians and even from a priest's perspective. I was a little disappointed by the outcome, but I guess it's realistic and more authentic that way, even though it's heartbreaking. This is one of the best Japanese novels I've read so far.

I liked the simplistic style and found the religious zealotary convincing but found it difficult to empathise with the main protagonist. We are in an age where it's considered unacceptable to inflict your religious views on others (AKA spreading the word in other eras). Despite the obvious cruelty of the Japanese I had some sympathy with their impatience.

Interesting, but religious novels do not appeal to me.

If ever there was a Christian novel that caused you to question your own understandings, and then gave you comfort for seeking out the answers, this is it. An incredibly moving story that I will keep in my library, always.

This book is a wonderful subject, about the Jesuit missionaries secretly coming to Japan in the 17th century. But I was somewhat surprised to find I did not enjoy this as much as I thought I would, maybe because I knew the ending well in advance, and I did not want the ending to be what it was.
