- Kira(Light Yagami): Idealistic killer who believes himself to be god and kills criminals to create his idea of Utopia. Is also acting as L despite the title belonging to Near.
- L: the original detective dedicated to catching Kira, but was killed in the process
- Kiyomi Takada: New spokesperson for Kira, talk host of NHN, Light's former girlfriend.
- Aizawa: member of the Japanese task force, becomes suspicious of Light.
- Mikami Teru: Kira's substitute; possesses the notebook.
- Mello: Originally L's 2nd in line to be his successor and heir, Mello runs off and becomes leader of the Mafia in order to catch Kira before Near. Lover of chocolate bars.
- Near: L's successor and heir. Leader of the SPK.
- Matt: Mello's best friend and current partner.
- Rester: Near's right hand man, the only person in SPK that none of the police has seen yet.
