- Madame Hoffmann: Initially, this character struck me as rather unbelievable. She's depicted as artistic, sensitive, spoiled, and a bit shallow on topics other than art. But, as the story unfolded, I began to appreciate that there was more depth to her character. By the end of the story, she seemed almost human and slightly intelligent. However, I still didn't like the fact that she assumed others were right about her husband without ever questioning their assumptions. Her only saving grace, and possibly the only reason for her character at all, was her discovery and subsequently the reader's discovery of one very important fact from her husband's former employer. Without that one scene, barely more than one important sentence, there was no real need for her to be in the book at all.
