Introduction:
The Strange Boarders
of Palace Crescent
By
E. PHILLIPS OPPENHEIM
There were many mysterious things about Mrs. Dewar's apparently respectable Palace Crescent boarding house and about her apparently respectable boarders. The first thing which struck Roger Ferrison, a new arrival, as odd, was the elderly man-servant's insistence that all the boarders hang up their keys when they retired. Yet at two A.M. one night five keys were still missing, their owners, obviously abroad in the London night. The presence of Flora Quayne, lame but so beautiful that one forgot her infirmity, struck another exotic note in these drab surroundings. Seemingly rich, imperious, she evidently exerted a strange dominance over the house and was not nearly so helpless as she pretended to be.
The goings and coming at weird hours of the night and the actions and looks of Mrs. Dewar and of the man-servant brought Roger's curiosity to the boiling point. Finally, because of a couple of crimes committed in the neighborhood, the police began to take a sudden interest in the house, and at about the same time Roger began to take a very definite interest in one of the young lady boarders.
This is one of the best of Mr. Oppenheim's extraordinarily clever stores, with ingenious twists and intriguing clues, spiced by the presence of a charming hussy.
