Glossary edit see section history

  • The Completely Abridged and Unofficial Glossary about Casinos and Cruise Ships: Describe this term.
  • Basic Strategy --: These are the guidelines that a gambler needs to follow for the best chance to win. There is a catch though -- like reading the Bible, everyone that studies basic strategy walks away with a different interpretation.
  • Beam of a Ship --: The part measured from port to starboard, even though it is much easier to say from the left side to the right side of the ship. Just remember there are four letters in port and left.
  • Bridge --: The room on the ship from where the boat is driven.
  • Brits Abroad --: British people have the reputation for being quite a handful when they travel. As in, “Brits Abroad were involved in a smash-up with the fans of Madrid after a football game.” Or, “Brits Abroad got into a brawl in Majorca while on holiday.”
  • The Cooler –: I hate when people ask me if I am the cooler, there is no cooler. It was invented to sell a movie. Most people are their own cooler. Besides, the cooler is not the dealer, but another player.
  • Crap Game – Craps Game: A game played with dice where players like to scream. Sometimes a seven is good, and sometimes it is bad. It’s all in the timing. Craps is so complicated that they award a degree in it at University of Nevada Las Vegas. Before you play, read a book!
  • Croupier --: A glorified name for anyone who deals in a casino. But honestly, doesn’t “Sarah is a croupier” sound so much classier than “Sarah is a craps dealer”?
  • Crew --: The people that work on a ship. It’s just like in Merry Old England - the crew are the commoners, the officers are royalty.
  • Good Hands –: When dealers have good hands, they can pick up the correct number of chips just by feel: they are fast and efficient. Women, imagine what a man who has good hands can do for you.
  • Juice –: The connections that help a person get a job in a casino. As in, “I can’t believe that she got the job, she is a terrible dealer. The boss is her cousin? Now I understand -- she’s got juice.” Just like everywhere else, it’s who you know, not what you know.
  • Cruise Quarters --: The part of the ship that is under the waterline. This is where the crew lives: occasionally the crew is allowed upstairs, where they can catch a glimpse of the sun.
  • Procedures --: Rules that dealers have to learn that govern every move they make: which hand to pay a bet with or pick up the cards with, and even how to stand at a dead game. The purpose of these rules is to play with the dealers’ minds, because as soon as the dealers memorize them, management changes them.
