A must read for anyone interested in the rise of modern day terrorism, the Taliban, Osama bin Laden and all the accompanying political intrigues and double-dealing.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Pros:
Very factual book that ties many dissident events together into an illuminating historical reference. It brings to light a great deal of the history and anger towards the US.
Cons:
It can get quite dry going through the countless well layered details.”
“What's there to say about this book? It's pretty much the standard history on the US v. al Qaeda prior to 9/11, and for good reason.
You'd think I would have read this already, since it's 101 level reading. I've been working on it (on and off, obviously) since 2004, and I think I'm currently on the third copy that I've bought (iBooks this time). 200 or so pages to go.”
“(started to read....havent gotten very far yet...only read through page 38/chapter 2...back at library...will pick up again in future)”

Coll, who has been a foreign correspondent, editor and New Yorker writer, is masterful at explaining ideology, culture and even tactics in discussing something like Pakistan's notorious ISI intelligence agency.
We are hosting al-Qaida expert Peter Bergen at the Bob Graham Center on Oct. 12. This is an incredible book that can help you prep for that session if you're planning to attend.”

Now reading it in full (& re-reading the sections I had previously) after Osama Bin Laden's death, I find it fascinating. I know what they say about retrospect & hindsight, but with this book the perspectives become awesome. The commentaries on sub-rosa Pakistani-U.S. relations are particularly germane in 2011.”
