“The story jumped around a bit, but overall this was a good conclusion to this series. I was a little thrown off by her suddenly dead fiancé who we never actually met; however, Beka's other love interest makes up for the somewhat false relationship she had with her betrothed.
This is Beka's most important mission yet, and Tamora Pierce made sure to keep the reader (and the poor heroine) guessing as to what would happen next. I did not enjoy the twist at the end of the novel, but I suppose it was a necessary evil. All in all, Mastiff was an enjoyable read that earns a solid 3.5 stars.”

“After Beka Cooper's fiance, who she had been thinking of breaking her engagement with, died, she felt guilty, but the night she buried him, Lord Gershom assigns her a secret mission along with her partner Tunstall, her scent hound Achoo, and a mage named Farmer. They go to the Summer Palace, where they discover that the young prince had been kidnapped, and they must track him down. With the addition of Lady Sabine to their party, they finally succeed in findign the prince only to have to face Tunstall's treason, but Beka's strong determination gets the job done and sees the King set the groundwork for the illlegalization of slavery.”

“This book was pretty good until the last few chapters. Fell apart for me--felt like the character were way out of character (although it also happened at the midway point.) In the end this book and the second in the series really didn't work out that well for me. I loved the first book, but wish I'd stopped reading there.”
