In a society that purges thirteen-year-olds who are creative, identical twins Aaron and Alex are separated, one to attend University while the other, supposedly Eliminated, finds himself in a wondrous place where youths hone their abilities and learn magic.

- Alex Stowe: The main character, a twin who was Unwanted due to his creativity and sentenced to be purged.
- Aaron Stowe: Alex's twin brother, a Wanted. He excels at the Wanted University and moves up to something more important.
- Marcus Today: Wizard, creator of Artime, very cool.
- High Priest Justine: Ruler of Quill
- Meghan Ranger: Alex's musical neighbor
- Lani Haluki: Alex's friend, a storyteller, and the youngest in their group of Unwanteds. She has bright blue eyes. She's a great magician.
- Samheed Burkesh: Alex's friend, sometimes; skill for acting. Has some anger issues at times. He can be sneaky sometimes.
- Will Blair: Samheed's actor friend. Hes not a good person to hangout with.
- Ms. Claire Morning: Meghan's teacher
- Simber: Stone winged cheetah. He is very observant and loyal to Marcus.
- Sean Ranger: Meghan's older brother
- Ms. Octavia: Alex's teacher.She is part octopus, part alligator.
- Gunnar Haluki: Wolf that lives in the jungle
- Clive: Resident of Alex's blackboard. He can be a little impatient or snotty. Doesn't like not knowing what Alex is doing.
- Quill: The place where the Wanteds and Neccesasrys live. There is little color, and they are surrounded by a wall.
- Mr. Sigfried Appleblossom: Theater teacher. Speaks in couplets.
- Strang: A Governor
- Mr. Burkesh: A Governor
- Jim: A flying tortoise. Does everything really slowly.

- Unwanteds: People who dare to be creative. They had been caught being creative in Quill, and are purged when they are 13.
- Wanteds: People with orderly minds. They obey all the rules of Quill. They are some of the highest ranking people in Quill. The Quillitary and government are made up of Wanteds.
- Necessaries: People who contribute in ordinary ways. They may have done something against the rules at one point, but did not do enough to cause them to be purged.
- Quillitary: The military. Uses run down vehicles and rusted metal weapons. They have never been in battle.
