Author: Laurence Yep
Spring Pearl is a very courageous, strong, and troublesome (to the Sung family). With her friend Doggy by her side, she learns the proper educates to become more lady like. But that’s not all this story, along with vivid language is sad nerve racking and very enjoyable. The most interesting part is when she has a strong, outrageous idea that the British would soon attack, and soon enough, like she had predicted, along come the British ready for battle. So we meet people with different traditions and ways of life which might be the reason why the British attack.
Spring Pearl the Last Flower is a must read book, a story of change and courage. Laurence Yep creates breathtaking ideas that will absolutely blow your mind. The words were just flowed as I made a little movie in my head, that is how descriptive his writing is. I felt as though I was in the story with Spring Pearl, and it felt like I was listening to her in person while I was reading, Laurence Yep picked the right time, place, and girl for this outstanding book.
Spring Pearl the Last Flower is attention grabbing and fascinating. I recommend this book to any girl, because it is an American Girl Doll Book, that is fascinated by finding out about other people‘s culture. This book would also fit a girl who can dive into a great book and not put it down for a good 30 minutes to an hour. That is why I recommend this book to people.”
“Spring Pearl's parents were poor artists that died abruptly. Now she must turn to her father's rich friend, a merchant, for shelter. Unfortunately, though the merchant is kind, his wife and children sneer at Spring Pearl's country ways and the fact that her mother refused to have her daughter's feet bound in the traditional manner. However, when a revolution shakes their city, and the merchant is thrown into jail, Spring Pearl and her friend Doggy quickly prove themselves to be valuable and beloved to the family.”

A young girl's father dies, leaving her without a home. She is given a chance to move in with another family but, due to her rather low social status, she's not actually welcomed by the people who live at her new home.
It's also not a settled time in China's history, because the England had been at war with them once and was getting ready to go to war against China again. There's even politics on the local level which affect her new household.
Spring Pearl is a strong young female character in a time when strong young female characters were few and the weight of society helped to crush aspirations of young women of the time.
It is interesting to see the lives of what probably amounted to around a middle-class family of the time. The historical section at the end of the novel is also interesting,
”
“Brings the reader's attention to many worthy issues: the Opium Wars, British occupation of the world, classism and sexism in 1850s China. For mature readers, but definitely worth it!”
