Lola: So Mimi’s back.
Sheridan Sakura Carlotta: I know. The whole office smells of guano. *picks up Febreze and starts obsessively squirting the product into the air* You know, she brought some bats home with her. “Vampire bats†she said, “makes me feel closer to V.†Oh Lola, you’re looking a little green. Don’t worry. I made her promise not to let them leave her closet. It’s not like we go in there anyway what with her shrine to Ed Gein in there. No really. Stop…stop gagging and if you must, please stay away from my red velvet couch. I just got it upholstered. Ok how about you just breathe deeply *squirts Febreze in Lola’s direction*…there you go. Breathe it in…No wait okay you’re gagging again and…how about I distract you? I urhm…oh I recently read “If You Dare†by Kresley Cole! I liked it! Though I must say, I didn’t quite care for the hero’s “dinnaâ€, “donna†, “canna†terms of speech. I found it all confus….LOLA! DONNA YOU DARE THROW UP ON MY COUCH!

Julianna F wrote this review Sunday, October 4 2009. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No“The first in the MacCarrick brothers trilogy this book centers around Courtland MacCarrick and a sassy somewhat royal Andorrian named Annalia. When Annalia was out riding one day she finds a Scot who appears beaten to death by the river. With much struggle her and her horse drag him back to her home where she nurses him back to health despite that he is a Scot and probably a mercenary hired by the man who is trying to take over everthing including her home and land.
Both characters argue and bait each other throughout the first half of the book. Annalia has relied on stories and tainted opinions to cloud her judgement of Scots and Court in particular. Some may find her predjudice ways to be intollerable but I didn't have a problem reading about her at all.
When Anna comes to realize that her thoughts and behavior towards Court are incorrect and ignorant she finds that he isn't quite the brute she thought. After a while she think she may want to keep him even.
Court has known the life a mercenary for most of his life. He appears uncaring and uncivilized. He often thought that he would never take a wife and couldn't because of a curse that has been hanging over the family for generations.
I honestly can't do this book justice. I thought it was a simply wonderful romance. I often pausing while reading it just to reflect on something that Court said to Anna. The book made me smile and occasionally laugh. It also reminded me how much I really want my very own Highlander.
I have read a few of Kresley Cole's paranormal books and I even gave them 5 stars, still they were not keepers for me. This one, however, is staying in my keeper bookshelf forever where I can reread Court and Anna's story and feel my romantic soul sigh with pleasure.”
“They need half stars on here....i would have given it another 1/2. I liked this but it was kinda cheesy. I did enjoy it though....the characters dialogue was frequently very funny. I will read the series...there are 3 MacCarrick brothers apparently and each of them get their own book. I will also mention that the copy editing in this was poorly done....some of the words had the wrong spelling variations and it was annoying me.”

Prejudiced, haughty, opinionated...The only saving grace was the obvious love she held for her brother, willing to do anything to save him, although that one safely landed her in the TSTL pile.
The entire book was a bit silly, if you ask me. The heroine kept ending up in one mess after another, and for a person so "educated" and of "so elevated rank", she didn't appear to have any brain cells at all.
The hero was your typical monosyllabic, acerbic, towering, glowering etc. brute, but unlike the rest of his hero-mates out there, he was a bit more on the Neanderthal side of the block, topped with complete lack of social capabilities and utter inability to act as a normal human being. When brutes such as him meet their intended they tend to soften and develop some communication skills, beside conking the woman with a club, but Court was as much of a brute after he met her than he was before.
The plot was all over the place, as well. After the initial perilous situation wore off, all the later attempts at rekindling the suspense provided more of a comic relief than anything else. For such skilled and ruthless assassins those Rechazados did a really lousy job if you ask me.
And then, there's the curse. Judging by the prologue I was sure I'd get a gripping historical paranormal romance, instead the blasted curse was only mentioned sporadically and when it was the only thing that explained some stupidity the hero did or said.
And I hoped the first book (actually a novella) was a fluke about me not being able to relate to the characters. I was completely detached from Court and Annalia as well, not to mention their romance...The author could've done a good service to her readers if she didn't make her such a idiotic virgin (I hate when that happens - a virgin, yes, but why ignorant as well?) and him such an overbearing ass.
The only thing that saved this book for me were the few, yet satisfying, humorous passages. They made me laugh - out loud - and that's always a good thing.”
