“This book had me divided for a long time. It was difficult to decide how many stars to give it. On one hand the plot is rather light and easy and I was sometimes thinking that there could be more substance. On the other hand the story was so well written and delightful that I couldn't help but enjoy it all the way through. The mood of the writing sometimes reminded me of Anne of Green Gables and sometimes of the books by Jane Austen which in my book is a big plus.
In the end I decided that I loved it - not despite the lightness of the story but because of it. It's supposed to be a romantic comedy, and it does that really well. One thing I love about the novel is the way the author describes the supporting characters - some of them are quirky and nosy and a little judgmental, and a lot of them are really sweet and lovable. The drama never takes over which makes the story extremely enjoyable to live in. Patricia Brent (the main character) was quite annoying at times, the way she insisted on viewing her situation, but because it was necessary for the story it was okay.
The book is public domain (originally published in 1918) and is free to download. I listened to it as an audio book (from LibriVox) narrated by Anna Simon and very much recommend this version.
