A complete masterpiece. The book explores the hypocrisy of Victorian England in the 1880's, and the way in which parents used religiion, and religious ideas, to harm their children, both intentionally, and unintentionally, and also the way children grew away from their parents in order to gain independence. More generally, it is a study of the way the absolute, or literal commitement to an idea can cause harm, and the need to proceed along the mean, or middle way of life, even if that is not entirely logical. The book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible expresses the same idea, which is why some doubt Ecclesiastes should hav been included in the Bilbe in the first place. This book becamse popular after WWI, by which time the author had died, when people questioned the existing social order.

A bit of a slow read with heavy narration, but full of great quotes. "All animals except man know that the principal business of life is to enjoy it." "A man is not to be sneered at for having a trump card in his hand; he is only to be sneered at if he plays his trump card badly." "So far as he thought at all, he thought wrong, but what he did was right."
