I don't know how true to gang life it really is, but it was recommended by a student for me to read and I wasn't disappointed. It seemed realistic to me. It's the kind of edgy book middle and high school students like to read.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“At first, I was finding it to be a surprisingly okay read, but I just got sick of it by the fiftieth page. I flipped ahead and discovered the main plot points that might have been interesting if I cared about the characters, but I don't. Julie DiVino is pretty much just annoying. “In a school run by gangs, stating out was hard then joining. We knew who are friends were, and were careful what we said. If people thought we were haters, it would only be a matter of time...Lines are clearly marked at South Bay High School. Its mixed territory for the Crips and the Bloods, which means the drama never stops. Julis DiVino wants none of it. No colours, no C-walks ts just not her thing. but when Eric Valiente jumps into her life, everything changes. Lines are redrawn and then they're crossed.
I really liked this book. Im not really into reading about gangs and such but this book got me hooked on reading about them. It was intense and thrilling. And the end leaves you shooked and in complete "aw". A Must Read!”

Plus, the writing is just bad. It's not the worst I've seen, and it's not horrendous or anything, but it's not good. Snitch just wasn't worth finishing.”
“Walking into my school library I never thought I'd find such an honest, down to earth, eye opening book. If you’re looking for a great read I would suggest Snitch by Allison Van Diepen. This book was very interesting and it kept me on the tip of my toes. The word snitch means to indirectly tell secrets or offenses to a person of authority or any person meant to be kept away from a secret or offense, sometimes inadvertently. Snitch contains lots of gang violence, sex, and drama. As we all know growing up snitching was never supposed to be a good thing, this book somewhat explains why. I don’t believe I ever experienced a dull moment while reading this book. Although there were lots of violent and obscene parts in the reading I would still recommend Snitch to my peers. The reason being is because by reading it you could develop a whole different view on a lot of things such as gangs, and teenage life in rull areas such as Flint, Detroit, and Brooklyn etc. This book mostly focuses on gang violence; the blues (crips) against the reds (bloods) and of course the outcomes of snitching and how serious snitching can be in some places of the world. Reading this book made me have a different perspective on a lot of things as a whole. For instance living and growing up in a unstable house hold and being told that you had to be in a gang because it was a part of life is no different than growing up in a Christian house hold, and being told that you have to be Christian and that believing in God is a way of life. Either way it goes we are all brought up a certain way and we’re most likely going to think, believe, and do a lot of the same things as the ones who raised us. Although some may still say Snitch would be an inappropriate book for teens/ high school students I would beg to differ. Not only would teens be able to connect with this book but they would also be able to get answers about “teenage” things and educate themselves on how other high school student may live in other places. Reading Snitch makes my want to find every book written by Allison Van Deipen and read away.”
