A handsome, young, popular territorial judge in thriving Santa Fe should have no problem selecting a wife. But Bartholomew Durant looks upon courtship as a necessary evil to relieve the pressure from all sides. One fine sensible girl receives the coveted invitation but Leah Masters arrives, tiny, overburdened with silk and velvet, and faints at his feet before getting a word out. Hardly a good first impression. Bart dismisses her from his mind and goes about his daily business, helping the cause of justice even outside the courtroom. He gives advice on protecting the territory and spends time with his favorite people, his best friend Robert Markham, US Marshal, the territorial governor, Robert's father Michael Markham. Most of all, he gets to try to match Alethia, a Mexican childhood friend who can run rings around him for selfless service and insightful Christian character. Before long the pressures of his position close back in when Bart has to deal with Father Diego, an activist Jesuit with his own plans for the territory. An assassin almost robs Santa Fe of its problem-solving, service-minded judge and Bart is left flat on his back, bitter and depressed and begging to die rather than be dependent on receiving help he has always been more than strong enough to give. He spares no time to wonder whether his first impression of Leah Masters as spoiled, sickly and useless was correct. God forces him to find ways to get "back on his feet" spiritually, if not physically, while Leah Masters, recovered from the illness she ignored to make the trip, finds ways to be of service and impress everyone except the man she thought she was coming to marry. The assassin and the person who paid him are not through trying to get to Bart yet, though, and Robert has to work through his own bitterness and suspicions to get at the truth and protect the judge before it is too late.

Characters/People edit see section history

Quotes edit see section history

  • “"I do major surgery in a hospital, not a hacienda, Marshal!" “I don’t know. This is such a lonely place. It’s a place where people struggle and suffer and die. How can you bear to be alone here?” “You’re right, Bart. Someone would have to doeverything for you; Someone Who’s used to helping the helpless; Someone Who’s all-powerful, all-wise, all-loving. Someone Who put you in this condition for a purpose. Maybe He wanted to show you that He should have been the Judge of the territory all along, but you wouldn’t let Him."”
