Two brothers find a way to get along when staying home together. This Book is brilliant for years 3 & 4 casual teaching days. It can be read in a single reading session and many of the kids know the movies (Jumanji and Zathura).
Van Alsberg is hands-down my favourite children's author!

This sequel to Jumanji really fell short for me. It did not compare to the magic of the original. It was very predictable and formulaic. I also did not enjoy the ending. I felt like Van Allsburg ran out of steam and just cut it off short.

My lovely colleague Jennifer Li referred me this book when I was stuck for inspiration on a Science assignment. Zathura is the sequel to Jumanji and follows a similar format; a magical board game discovered and gone wrong. All in all, this book is wonderful for stretching the imagination and as an introduction to a unit on the Solar System.

A wonderfully black and white illustrated picture book about a mysterious board game that propels a pair of brothers...and their house into space.
"From the hallway came the sound of rattling metal and a steady clank, clank, clank. The boys stared at the doorway as a shiny silver robot stepped into view."

Find out what happens to Danny Budwing, the young boy seen at the end of Jumanji running away with the board game in his hand. It's "out of this world"....

    Uses in the classroom:
a creative take on the solar system, can be used in conjunction with a science unit
used to teach lessons of sibling rivalries or the consequences of making decisions.

    Connections:
Jumanji, the first book of the story
    other books about brothers
other books about the consequences of playing games

    Quote:
"Danny," Walter called softly. Danny looked up at his brother's floating head. "Danny," he began, "I never told you this, but I...."And that was all he got to say, because the hole kept rising, past his mouth, his nose and finally right over the top of his head.

I've never read Zathura, but always meant to. Surprisingly, the author didn't use the same art style he used for Jumanji, and I do wonder why. Zathura does depend on the popularity of Jumanji to help it along. This book has the same premise as Jumanji but is entertaining in its own right, and how it ended was inventive. I do wish it was longer...the game was left unfinished, so to speak. But then again, it is a picture book, not a young adult novel so I'll let it slide.
