Involves settling of New Amsterdam where even for the privileged, hardship and suffering were a part of everyday living. Wonderful character development in a totaly believeable setting. Also insight into the lives of some of the famous settlers we all learned about in American History.”

Swerling did not spare us the grusome personal details of whoredom and murder, but told the unabridged truth in a way that was not offensive. Bravo.”

A quick read written in the style I associate with historical fiction (not my favorite), but this book is worth the read.”

An amazing saga following the Turner family and it's decendants starting in 1661 through to 1798. The story begins with Lucas (a Barber Surgeon) and Sally (an Apothecary) Turner, brother and sister who made the journey to Nieu Amsterdam (current day New York - back when it was a Dutch colony). Until Lucas betrays Sally in the worst way and a family feud is started that streches through their offspring from one century to another as does the Turner love for medicine and surgery. The story takes you through two wars, endless family drama, love, hate, vengeance, racism, slavery, murder and much more. I LOVED this novel and it's characters will defenitely be in my heart and mind for eternity. ”

I would recommend this book. At times it reads like a John Jakes novel. It is probably not as good as I had hoped it would be. Probably a three star book.”

This book is very descriptive in the methods used for surgery in the 16th and 17th century, not for the faint-hearted. Enjoyed the fictional family that is carried through the entire story, while learning about the earliest settlers of a great city, and a great country. The book is long, but I was never bored.”

I love novels that cause me to do further research on what the novel was about, and this filled the bill! The author does an excellent job of weaving the story around the history, and make it an entirely interesting, exciting experience. There are two more in this series, and I can't wait!”
