Carrere's writing style is taut yet easy to read without the usual flinching in gory crime novels.
Jean-Claude Romand killed his wife, two children, and both parents, then went for a stroll to buy the newspaper, running into several people who later noted that Romand seemed fine. Deception and pretensions seem to be knacks that Romand knew well as he pretended every day to be a prestigious doctor working for World Health Organization. Apparently, neither his wife, those closest to him, or his friends, ever suspected this betrayal. Indeed, those closest to him trusted him completely, as did currently in the news, Bernard Madoff, with his failed Ponzi scheme, the victims investing their life savings with Romand as he frittered it away on a Parisian mistress and assorted baubles.
Riveting little peek into the dark abyss.”
“An absolutely fascinating read - very absorbing and its hard to take in the enormity of the deception here and then the final actions of the man - well written and meticulously researched ”
