“With a powerful central female character, set in a compelling other-world, this novel deals with contemporary themes - love, sex, loyalty, honour, patriotism, foreign occupation, and female subjugation. This is a dark book; warning!”

The story gripped me from the beginning and kept me going right up to the end. Though I can't quite put my finger on what I don't like about Lisle's style of writing, I have always admired her talent for worldbuilding. The worldbuilding in this book is complex and interesting, but is, at times, taken a bit far...to the point of feeling like it is being shoved down your throat. This is odd for me as I am usually thrilled by worldbuilding and wind up wanting more out of most books. Even with this one small negative, I will still read the next Tonk book, "Hawkspar."
I would recommend this to both seasoned fantasy fans as well as newcomers to the genre.”
“A rocking good read! Though there are more books to come in this world, Talyn is a that rare thing among fantasy novels these days, a stand alone story with awesome world-building, a great lead, and lots of action. There is a great magical metaphysics described here and a truly despicable villain. If you like David Gemmel or Mercedes Lackey, you will like Holly Lisle. Try finding another author who can combine those two takes on the fantasy genre. Lisle can be brutal and beautiful, sometimes in the space of a single page. Well worth reading.”
