  • Kwame Hargrove: Son of Precious Hargrove, who has a secret he tries not to let anyone know.
  • Brandi: Stripper, who becomes the protoge of General, and becomes a major player in the book.
  • Lee Kilgore: Police woman. A major character; she wants to become Chief of Police of Atlanta.
  • Zora: "Baby Brother"'s female friend who is against the war. She is a "fine" woman, who is not against drinking or sex, but is very careful with both.
  • Regina: Blue's Wife
  • Juanita: The General's dead lover, who is the only woman he ever loved. She was also Blue's mother.
  • Bob Watson: A shady politician, who draws Capt. Lee Kilgore into a deal with the drug trade.
  • Abbie: Regina's aunt
  • Joyce Ann: The 3 yr old daughter of Kwame and Aretha Hargrave.
  • Precious Hargrove.: One of the main characters, who rund Mandeville Maids, but has ambitions to become Mayor of Atlanta, and seems to be the front-runner for the job. Her sone is Kwame, married to Aretha.

  • Samson Epps: Man in charge of a war outreach program. Very rigid, doesn't want to endanger his government funding.
  • Blue Hamilton: Godfather like figure; husband of Regina. A main character of the book. His character brings philosophical questions into the book. Is what he does good?
  • Teddy: the friend of Kwame who takes care of him when he goes in on "down low" night. I've never heard this term before, but you will come to know if from the book.
  • Wesley: The one called "Baby Brother" by those who know him. Real name is Wesley Jamerson, and he deserts from his unit in Iraq, because he doesn't want to get killed. He is helped by Blue Hamilton, a major character, but can't really stay out of trouble.
  • Baby Brother: Young man who served in Iraq. See also "Wesley" and Wesley Jamerson.
