High school isn't too bad for Carlos Amoroso, except for the fact that he may be the only guy that hasn't gone all the way--or even kissed a girl. That's only because Carlos is waiting for his crush, Roxy Rodriguez, the most popular girl in school. The only problem is that Roxy doesn't even notice Carlos in the tiniest bit. And it's really bad that Carlos's friends keep on talking about all the girls they've been with.

But Carlos has a plan, which ironically appeared in his brain when he came upon the hit television show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. What better way to have someone notice you than by getting a complete makeover? All he needs is someone to do the makeover for him, and he's found the perfect person, Sal--the guy who everyone thinks is gay. Before he knows it, Sal agrees to help him out, but it comes with a price: Carlos has to pay Sal, and he has to help establish a Gay-Straight Alliance at their school.

With the help of Sal, Carlos takes on a whole new identity. With new clothes and a new hairstyle, along with a room that doesn't look like a dump, Carlos actually looks good. But not only is Carlos changing, but so are his friends, the way he feels about his dad, and the way he feels about Roxy. Could this makeover be for the best, or was it worth it at all?

Alex Sanchez does it again with his newest novel GETTING IT. On the surface, this is a hilarious story that feels like another episode of Queer Eye, but underneath lies serious issues that are prevalent in every high school. Alex Sanchez takes readers on a journey that may possibly change the way the readers view certain issues. This is the perfect book that includes a perfect lesson.

This is one of my favorite Sanchez books. I love that the main character is a straight teenage boy who seeks the help of a gay teenage boy to help remake him so that he can try to win the heart of the girl he lusts after. He gets way more than he planned for when he realizes that everything he once thought about homosexuals is wrong. His make over goes way beyond his physical appearance. A great book for all teens...particularly straight boys!

this book is very sexual do please if you are under the age of 12 do not read!!
this book is about a boy who doesnt know the feeling of getting laid or having a single girl freind feels like. He is tired of hearing his buddies talk about how their night was hooking up or how their relationship was going. Every day the boy would watch these queer guys transform a nonqueer guy into somthing different so he can impress his girlfriend. The boy got an idea and went to ask his queer friend if he could help him get a makeover too. He did help him and the guy got this girl to like him but the girl only wanted to get into his pants. All in all the boy didnt get the "sex" he wanted but got the feeling that he can wait for the right girl and right time to go though everything that he wants to got through.

This book is going quite quickly and I am actually enjoying the book. I am reading for Literary Bites at school and I only got it a day ago and I am a third of the way though and I haven't even had that much time to read lately.

GETTING IT is not the best written book I’ve ever read, but it does tackle some tough issues quite admirably, with likeable characters and a fairly believable plot. Carlos Amoroso is convinced that he’s the only fifteen-year-old virgin around, and he wants to change that. He’s got his eye on Roxy Rodriguez–but she doesn’t even notice his existence, and Carlos doesn’t know how to change that. While watching television one night, he flips to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. It gives Carlos an idea.

He asks Sal, the guy at school everyone says is gay, to help him out. In exchange for making over Carlos so that girls will notice him, Sal wants help starting a Gay-Straight Alliance at their school. Carlos isn’t sure what he thinks about that–one thing he inherited from his father is homophobia–but he’ll agree to anything to get Roxy’s attention.

The issues addressed in this novel are important, and the characters are good. Alex Sanchez’s writing doesn’t really flow as well as it should; it’s a bit awkward and inconsistent sometimes. However, GETTING IT is not a bad book; it has potential, certainly, but it could be better. It’s worth reading, though, especially if you’re interested in books about gay teenagers (Carlos is not gay, of course, but homophobia is the main issue addressed in this book), or specifically gay Latino teenagers. I might even pick up more by Alex Sanchez!

Getting It is about a boy named Carlos who has trouble talking to girls. To help build his confidence, he asks the gay guy in school, Sal. Sal agrees to help him get his "dream girl" if he promises to help him back. Sal wants Carlos to tell all his friends to stop making fun of him and to let him "join their clique." It's a really good book and very funny. It's one of those type of books that make you want to know more !

This is a fun, fast read (each chapter is only one to two pages long!) about a serious topic. Fifteen year old Carlos wants nothing more than to have a girlfriend. He has her all picked out, and has had a crush on her for ages. The only problem is that she never notices him, and he is too scared to even try to talk to her. After watching "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", Carlos is struck with the idea of asking Sal, a guy who seems to have many friends among the girls but who appears as though he might be gay, to help him learn how to impress his crush, Roxy.

Sal is openly gay, and agrees to help Carlos "get the girl" (although he warns Carlos that she is not good enough for him), if Carlos agrees to help Sal form a Gay-Straight Alliance at their high school. Carlos agrees and Sal, who is a strong and confident person in his own right, begins helping Carlos to "get his act together".

Carlos difficulties with his parents' divorce, and his confusion about wanting to date a girl and not just "hook-up" are problems in the forefront of this novel. The difficulties of befriending a gay guy in a typical homophobic high school are the background for this story.

Carlos is an easy character for readers to identify with, as he seems like an "every guy" kind of person who wants to do the right thing but isn't always sure he wants to or can.

Another great YA read from Sanchez about a straight teen that enlists the help of a gay guy to give him a makeover and attract the girl of his dreams. He learns the true meaning of friendship and grows as a person. Sanchez perfectly captures the angsty and confusing world of teenagers.
