It is strange how things go in cycles and sometimes you just don't notice until later. I picked up this book because I was looking at my daughter's books and the title caught my eye. The blurb on the back and the reviews did not discourage me and I enjoyed the book. However, now that I am entering my review here, I notice the word secret in the title and realize the romance I just finished also had secret in the title. So is this coincidence, serendipity or synchronicity?

I don't know if my daughter would have suggested this title to me, but this was a fun, quick read. I like books written through letters; I find today's high school culture fascinating but scary and I am often looking for books set in other countries. So this was the right mix at the right time.

Cassie, Lydia and Emily and their pen-pals seem realistic to this quinquagenarian. I don't know how American high schoolers would see this book - they might find the Australian slang annoying or frustrating.

I don't think this book had any lasting impact on my life. I don't think it is that kind of novel. However, I would recommend the book to young adult readers, to others who might be curious about high school life in Australia and folks looking for a bit of escapist literature.
