An excellent look at Special Education trends and policy (albeit American). Hehir deals with what he terms 'ableism': Discrimination based on preconceived ideas and generalizations that people and society hold regarding people with disabilities. He writes about Universal Design for Learning which is a promising movement in education that encourages educators to rethink curriculum and lesson design in order to better meet the needs of diverse learners. This should be read by all educators to help them understand why inclusion is so important to a healthy society, and how to better reach all learners in our classrooms.
